Work Study Program

bagsWant a little extra money in your pocket? The Work-Study Program at Mansfield University can help you do just that. Work-study is a type of financial aid that allows you to earn money to assist with education expenses, gain valuable work experience (possibly in your field or major) and work with faculty, staff and administration.

Who is Eligible for Work-Study Employment?

Work-study is available to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's degree or professional degree.

There are two separate work-study programs: Federal, which is awarded to students who demonstrate financial need, and Institutional, which is available to all students regardless of need.

In order to qualify for work-study employment, you must meet the following criteria:

  • File a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and indicate you are interested in work-study.
  • Make satisfactory academic progress.
  • Be enrolled at Mansfield at least half-time.

help wantedOnce the FAFSA has been reviewed and you are found eligible, you will receive a work-study eligibility award on your financial aid award notice. If you did not indicate your interest in work-study on the FAFSA, you can add your name to the work-study waitlist link on the new site by logging into My Mansfield and clicking on the work-study link. You will choose "I am not eligible for work-study, please add me to the waiting list!". You will also need to indicate your major and a phone number where you can be reached. The Financial Aid office will review your work-study eligibility and send you an email indicating our determination.

Student Work-Study Procedures

If work-study has been included as a part of your financial aid package from Mansfield and you are interested in participating in this program, review the information below. It will give you valuable information about how to find employment, and hiring procedures.

studentStep 1. How do you find a work-study job?

Various departments on campus post work-study job openings at the beginning of each semester. You are responsible for obtaining your own position by applying in person to the individual departments that have openings. The Financial Aid Office does not guarantee employment or place students in positions. Check the online work-study job listings for available positions for the current semester. Please check the postings regularly to see if new jobs have been added.

Generally, positions on-campus allow students to work a maximum of six hours per week at the Pennsylvania state minimum wage. Due to limited funding, not all students who are eligible for work-study will be hired.

Step 2. What is the hiring process?

  • Log on to your My Mansfield account at my.mansfield.edu and click on the Work-study link to get started
  • Before a student can apply for a work-study position online, they must be certified as eligible to receive work-study. On the main page, select your work-study eligibility status. If you choose "I am not sure if I am eligible" or "I am eligible for work-study!", your information will be sent to the Financial Aid Office for certification. If you choose "I am not eligible for work-study, please add me to the waiting list", you will be added to the waiting list.
  • You must wait to receive an email from the Financial Aid Office that advises you of whether or not you are eligible to receive work-study.
  • If you receive an email from the Financial Aid Office advising that you are eligible, you may begin applying for work-study positions online.
  • Log on to your My Mansfield account and click on the Work-study link. Underneath your status section, you should see a list of available work-study positions. If you are interested in a particular position, click on the green plus sign to view more details. If you would like to apply for a position, click "Request Application." The applications you request will appear under your Status section.
  • Click on the link to retrieve the application. You may complete the employment application online prior to printing it off.
  • Take the completed application to the Work-study Supervisor indicated on the application and request to set up an interview for a position.
  • The Department Supervisor will sign your work-study application if they choose to hire you.
  • You must bring the signed work-study application and required payroll forms (see Step 3 below) to the Financial Aid Office, located at 231 South Hall.

*Departments have the discretion to hire students who they believe best meet the needs of the job.

Step 3. How do you get paid?money

Work-study is NOT automatically applied toward your charges for the academic year. That means your tuition bill will not reflect any money you receive from your work-study job. Instead, you will receive a bi-weekly paycheck that can be used to offset your educational expenses.

If you are participating in the Work-Study Program for the first time, you must:

  • Complete all necessary payroll forms.
  • Take your completed forms to the Financial Aid Office (located at 231 South Hall) immediately to prevent any delay in your employment. You must provide your MU Student ID card and Social Security Card in order to complete your new hire paperwork.
  • Read Work-Study Do’s and Don’ts also found on the new web-site to familiarize yourself with Mansfield University’s Work-Study policies. It will be assumed that you read and agreed to these prior to your acceptance into the work-study program.

Once you have turned in the necessary paperwork, you will receive an MU Student Employment (SE-1) Form in which you will be required to read, date, and sign and return to the Financial Aid Office in 231 South Hall.

IMPORTANT: You may not begin working until all the steps above have been properly completed and you receive an email indicating that you can begin working. Failure to do so may result in the termination of your employment.

If you have any questions regarding the Work-Study Program, contact the Financial Aid Office at 570-662-4418 or stop by 231 South Hall.
